Chronobiology of the Digital Day: A 24-Hour Behavioral Lifecycle
During Ramadan, the standard 9-to-5 rhythm is replaced by a distinct six-phase daily cycle. Understanding it is essential for timing ad delivery and content correctly.
The most useful insight for marketers working across a season like Ramadan is that the 24-hour day is restructured entirely. The usual rhythm gives way to a multi-peak structure set by fasting hours, sunset, and prayer times, and getting the timing wrong wastes budget on windows nobody is watching.
Phase 1, The Fasting Lull (9 AM – 2 PM)
Energy conservation drives low-intensity, functional engagement: news checks, work email, light scrolling. This is a low-impact window for conversion, brand awareness and save-for-later content work better than aggressive CTAs.
Phase 2, Anticipation & Preparation (2 PM – 5 PM)
As hunger sets in, recipe and Iftar-idea searches spike, cooking tutorials get high-intent views, and WhatsApp traffic surges as families coordinate the meal. This is the prime window for FMCG brands, ads should be solution-oriented, e.g. "ready in 20 minutes."
Phase 3, The Void (5 PM – 7 PM)
Traffic plummets across nearly every platform as people sit down to break the fast at Maghrib. Transaction data confirms the dip. Don't spend budget here, impressions delivered now are largely wasted.
Phases 4–6, Prime Time Through Suhoor (8 PM – 5 AM)
Screen time explodes after Iftar as users multiscreen TV and social (Phase 4), the most expensive but most effective window, where high CPMs are justified by high engagement. Shopping and gaming sessions peak between midnight and 3 AM as users browse Eid clothes and gifts (Phase 5), the prime impulse-buy window for flash sales. Finally, a smaller but devoted pre-dawn audience checks prayer times and reads Quran apps before Suhoor (Phase 6), a window for soft, affinity-building brand messaging rather than hard selling.
